Watts scored 44 points and at half way he had a six-shot lead from the rest of the eight competitors.
Peter Cameron finished in second place followed by Peter Dickson in third place with 36 points.
The final of the cup saw the 12 monthly winners from 2013 vie for the inaugural trophy.
Following the success of this first year of the event Armidale Club professional Andrew Walkley said he would like to see the event continue to grow.
“It has been a really successful event and each month there would be nearly 70 players every week,” he said.
“Yesterday for the first one for 2014 we had 72 players.”
“I am trying to turn it into a regional event and I am hoping that it will become a significant event on the club’s competition calendar.”
The competitors who contested the event yesterday also included Peter Schaefer, Wayne Smith, Chris Troon, Trevor Carson and Peter Schultz.
Bill Dangar, Brett Woodward, Bill Lankester and Jeffrey Myers were also finalists but did not contest the event.
The 2014 Walkley Cup is now in full swing.
The event will be held predominantly on the third Thursday of each month off the black tees for men and the red plates for women.
Monthly winners will receive a shirt as well as the prize of the day.
