Alligators put bite on short-course rivals

THE Armidale Alligators have powered through the water at the New England and North West short-course swimming championhsips on Sunday at The Armidale School.

The short-course championships saw the region’s best young swimmers battle it out in the pool.

The Alligators club had more than 178 individual entries into the championships, with the club claiming nine individual age titles.

Two of the club’s stars of the championships were Jay Kennedy and Winona Rumble.

Both Kennedy and Rumble claimed victory in their individual events and smashing championship records along the way.

Sixteen-year-old Kennedy claimed the men’s open age title, swimming away from the rest of the field to break records in the open men’s 400m freestyle, 200m breastroke and 200m backstroke.

Rumble also broke championship records in the 13 year girls’ 50m backstroke, 50m butterfly and the 100m backstroke.

The Alligators club also dominated the relay events, claiming victory in the mixed under-10 and under-12 200m freestyle relay and the mixed under-10 and under-14 200m medley relay.

All race winners from the short-course championships now have the nervous wait as they seek entry into the country championships.

Selection to swim at the championships, to be held at Sydney Olympic Park in late July, is subject to meeting qualification times. The short-course championships saw the region’s best young swimmers battle it out in the pool.
