Researchers from the University of New England will travel to regional centres to interview people aged 12 to 24 about the trauma experienced after the death of friends.

The young people will be encouraged to discuss their grief and how suicide had affected their lives and wellbeing.

Clinical psychologist and mental health specialist Warren Bartik is leading the project and said most studies into youth suicide had focused on prevention rather than coping strategies.

“While preventative work is vital, such a focus ignores the experiences of those most intimately involved in the suicide death of a young person,” he said.

“As suicide is unlikely to cease entirely, it is vital that we understand the experiences of those most closely affected, whose lives are changed forever.”

The project has been praised by headspace Tamworth centre manager Helen Carter, who said the issue deserved greater attention.

“Suicide is the leading cause of death among young people, even higher than road traffic deaths,” Ms Carter said yesterday. “It's important to balance research into prevention and early intervention, as well as finding methods of support should suicide eventually occur.”

Young people in regional areas were gradually coming to understand the importance of speaking about mental health issues, but Ms Carter claimed there was still some stigma from older generations.

“We still need to get the whole family onboard and understand the issue,” she said.

The project is part of the Collaborative Research Network into Mental Health and Wellbeing undertaken by five universities and Hunter New England Health.

Researchers hope to develop a framework to assist other young people who will be closely affected by suicide in the future. 

The program will also provide recommendations to governments to improve resources for young people. after a suicide occurs.
