The TAS rugby players have returned triumphantly from the NSW Country Schools Championships in Tamworth, having gained impressive results and a swag of representative selections.
Players came from across the New England region including schools in Armidale, Glen Innes and Inverell to compete at the carnival.
An under 16 side consisting of 21 players coached by TAS teacher Alex Smith and Patrick Strong, saw four TAS players gaining selection into the NSW Country Schools under 16 side.
Toby Crothers (Glen Innes), Luke Heagney (Guyra), Lachlan Creighton (Walcha) and Tom Lomax-Sewell (Armidale) will contest the championships to be played in Sydney later this month.
An open side of 22 players coached by TAS teachers Jason Lincoln and Jamie Moore saw four TAS players gaining selection in that team.
Matthew Baker (Armidale), Sam Kahl (Wee Waa), Mitchell Maguire (Tamworth) and Nicholas das Neves-Jones (Armidale) will contest the NSW Schoolboy Championships, hoping to gain selection in the NSW Open Schoolboys first or second XV.
“ We are delighted at the results for our boys,” said TAS first XV coach Jason Lincoln said.
“Overall TAS gained the most players into representative squads from all zones and both teams performed extremely well with New England’s opens losing to Newcastle 17-7 after leading 7-5 with 10 minutes to go in the final game, in front of a huge crowd.”
In addition seven TAS boys were selected in the Country Development Squad to travel to South Africa in April next year.
