Sports fanatic joins The Express team

23 Dec, 2009 10:06 AM
SPORT is life.

That is the motto Matt Nicholls lives by.

The newest addition to The Armidale Express team, you’ll struggle to find a sport that Matt doesn’t enjoy.

Cricket, soccer, rugby, football, tennis, golf, horse racing, netball, hockey, rugby league, lawn bowls ... you name it, Matt loves it.

He’s even tried his hand at all of them over the years, some with more success than others.

Despite his eagerness to try all things new, our incoming sports editor admits a lack of natural talent ruined his dreams of representing Australia on the sporting stage.

“I’m an enthusiastic trier,” he said.

“I wasn’t blessed with a lot of sporting ability but that hasn’t stopped me getting out there and having a go.”

There have been highlights, though.

“I kicked five goals in a game one day for my local footy club’s reserves side.

“That’s Australian Rules football ... the ‘real’ football.”

Born and bred in central Victoria, Matt was brainwashed on the aerial ping-pong game they play down south as child.

“It’s just what we do down there. There wasn’t soccer or rugby league to play,” he said.

“In summer, it was all cricket or tennis.”

Upon graduating from secondary school, he immediately took up journalism, starting as a cadet at his local weekly newspaper.

After 12 months he moved on to another regional newspaper, spending more than two years there as the sports editor.

“I figured if I wasn’t any good at sport at least I could be involved by reporting on it,” he said.

After completing his cadetship, a further challenge called.

“I wanted to test myself and work at a paper where I didn’t know anyone and I had to start from scratch.”

“I’m not a big fan of the city so I went looking for a regional daily paper.”

After a month of searching, a position at a daily in Mount Isa, Queensland, presented.

There Matt spent 14 months as the sports editor, braving scorching temperatures in the small city widely regarded as the capital of the Outback.

“It was a good experience up there,” he said.

“That’s where I developed a love for both rugby league and rugby union.

“I’ve always followed the Melbourne Storm but never seen league or union played before at club level.”

But living in one of Australia’s most isolated regions takes its toll, and ‘civilisation’, as Matt would call it, beckoned.

So he was quick to offer himself to The Armidale Express when sports editor James Polson left for the Sydney Morning Herald.

Having been in Armidale for a month, the town has already rubbed off on Matt.

“I’m loving it here so far,” he said.

“The community has been very warm and supportive and this weather definitely beats the 45 degree temperatures we had in Mt Isa.

“You can tell quickly that Armidale has a massive sporting community so I’m looking forward to getting stuck into the work and meeting the people involved in all sports.”
