Small schools pool their talent

20 May, 2005 08:43 AM
THE COMBINED talents of small schools held their own against their larger cousins in Wednesday's round of the Armidale District Schools Rugby League competition.

Walcha, Uralla and Guyra centrals schools , under the title WUG, won five of the eight games in four age groups they lined up in at the Consett Davis fields at the University of New England.

The carnival was rounds three and four of the six-round competition which will end with the finals on June 16.

WUG had two wins each in the 13s and 15s, and one in the 16s. Their worst performance was in the 14s where they lost both games.

Armidale High also maintained their chances of reaching the finals, with doubles in the 13s and 15s, and one win in the 14s, but were held scoreless in their two defeats in the 16s.

Competition convenor Tim Vaughan said the standard of rugby league in all grades were high.

"The wins by the WUG lads was more meritorious because they cannot train together because of the distances involved and often the players from the three schools don't know each.

"There was some very good football played in all grades. It's difficult to understand why the Saturday morning junior league is struggling with so many good players in the schools," he said.

RESULTS:

13s: WUG d OCC 16-10; AHS d Duval 26-10; WUG d Duval 10-8; AHS d OCC 10-8.
