Zoe proves a Mighty good buy

03 Jul, 2009 11:26 AM
AT $1000, Armidale filly Mighty Zoe is proving a cheap buy.

The three-year-old notched her second win from eight starts at Armidale on Wednesday, taking her earnings to almost $14,000.

Owner-trainer Lea Selby picked up the Ghataas-Roman Splendour filly at a bargain basement price at the Scone sales two years ago.

“She was unwanted, they thought she was too small,” Selby explained.

“But I liked her as a type, particularly with her four white socks.”

While relatively tall at 15.2 hands, Mighty Zoe is thinly framed - and has small hooves.

“I had to get special size three shoes for her,” Selby said.

Small though her feet may be, the filly knows how to pick them up and put them down: her eight starts have now yielded two wins and two minor placings.

Mighty Zoe took the 1400 metres Class 1 Handicap on Wednesday coming from barrier 13, with apprentice Jessica Drury deciding to push forward and race outside leader Cabriole.

The filly then held the challengers at bay.

“She is still learning and I thought she might be a run short,” Selby said of Mighty Zoe, named after her and husband Bill’s daughter.

Coastal trainers took six of the other seven races on the program.

John Shelton, who had eight runners on the day, had to wait until the last for success, with Innocenttassie taking the 1100 metres Open Handicap in a three-way photo from Miss Henrietta and Special Voyage.
