SPORT in Armidale and the surrounding region was dealt a blow by the rain on Saturday, with much of the scheduled sport called off on the weekend.
All Premier League games were abandoned, with clubs now scrambling to schedule a time to replay the fixtures before the finals.
When The Express spoke to East Armidale coach Peter McClenagh on Saturday morning to see if play was going to go ahead, he gave a diplomatic answer.
“We’ll play, but probably not soccer,” he said.
“Maybe we could challenge Souths to some synchronised swimming?”
In a blow for the Armidale and District Football Association, the Jack Vallance Carnival also had to be called off, with the games now rescheduled for this Sunday at the Rologas Fields.
Although the New England Nomads had a bye, all play in the Tamworth AFL competition was cancelled, with some grounds in Tamworth severely waterlogged.
Back in Armidale, the first grade rugby was played as a double-header at Bellevue Stadium.
Despite Moran Oval declared fit for use, the second and third grade games fixtured in Armidale were abandoned, with the points split due to a lack of time to reschedule ahead of the finals.
At Rugby League Park, play went ahead between the Rams and Warialda, despite the ground resembling a mud pit after just one of the scheduled five matches.
The Armidale School wasn’t going to let the rain get in the way of their match against English visitors Bryanson College.
In the first XV match the big English students beat TAS in a thriller.
Across the road at the Armidale greyhound track, the 10 races went ahead as planned.
It was a different story for the UNE and Armidale netball competitions, with play called off due to the slippery courts.
Rain delayed play for the big state pennant lawn bowls finals at Armidale City and Uralla, but being a three-day tournament, it largely had no affect on planning.
