The New England Mountain Bikers (NEMTB) started their winter racing season on Sunday with a well-attended lap race held on the mountain bike track at Sport UNE. Eighteen riders turned out to put their fitness and cross-country riding skills to the test on the technical 5km track, which was quite greasy due to recent rainfall.
The men’s division was hotly contested with Dan Nichol coming in in first place after the first lap, pumping out a fast lap time of 15 minutes and 46 seconds with Anthony Bamford only seven seconds behind him.
The second lap saw Anthony come in six seconds ahead of Dan, followed by Ben Harris, Dave Harris and Mark Trotter.
Unfortunately Dan received two tyre punctures on his third lap, which put him out of the race.
The men’s division was won by Anthony Bamford, completing five laps in a speedy time of 1.22.56, closely followed by Ben Harris in second place completing five laps in 1.24.37 and third place went to Mark Trotter completing five laps in 1.28.04.
The women raced over four laps and Marinda Teseling took out first place in a time of 1.23.59 with Lizi Hartley finishing in second place in a time of 1.48.41.
The junior division was down in numbers due to most of the usual young NEMTB cyclists riding in a three-hour fundraising mountain bike event earlier that day.
However Hamish Laffan, who has only recently moved into the senior division, and Jack Potter, the only official junior to race, both rode in the men’s division and completed five laps in competitive times, finishing ahead of many of the senior riders.
Overall, it was an impressive field of mountain bikers who attended and it will be exciting to see the outcome of upcoming races.
Congratulations to all riders.
