The senior race saw a deserved win for a former B grade rider who has lifted his performances enough to be competing in A grade.
In a tight finish Dave Jenner came out on top of the field and it was good to see him on the podium.
He was closely followed to the line by Western and Ken McDonald.
The junior race that saw Western come out on top was a win right on the line.
Throughout the race it was one of the front markers that had the race sewn up.
Scott Sullivan was out in front on his own for the later part of the race, and in an exciting sprint finish to the line, he was only beaten by half a bike length by Western.
They were followed home closely by Jo Benham and Karlee McMillan.
The Grafton to Inverell 228km road race was held on Saturday and a number of Armidale riders competed in the event.
Geoff Straub lined up in A grade with his MACE-McDonagh Blake team, John Scott-Hamilton in B grade, and Peter Creagan, Col Maciver and Phil Thomas in C grade.
A number of riders have been competing in State events over the last few weeks.
Mitch Bullen was most successful, winning the Sydney Winter Track Championships held at the Dunc Grey Velodrome on August 22.
Next up was the Inverell Junior Tour on August 29 and 30, with Bullen second and Pat Ainsworth fourth in the under 19s.
Ben Castle and Brent Weston were 12th and 13th in a quality field in the under 17s, and Gil Burgess was 12th in the under 15s.
Sam Jenner took on the under 13s, finishing in eighth place.
The club congratulates all those who had a go at this new event.
On September 5 Mick Hoult, Maciver, Scott-Hamilton, and Phil Thomas competed in the 136km Inverell to Moree handicap.
Thomas was in the second group to start, with the others in the following groups.
With a couple of other riders he managed to catch the leaders 30km from the finish, only to be swallowed up by the main bunch with the rest of the Armidale troops 15km out.
Thomas managed to hang on to this group, and was the best placed Armidale rider finishing in 10th place.
