TAS had a close win over Armidale High School in the opening round of the inaugural TOAD Cup Twenty/20 competition at TAS on Monday.
The match went right down to the wire and it was only during the last two overs of Armidale High’s innings that it became clear that TAS would win the day.
TAS started poorly, losing opener Lachlan Fletcher for a golden duck in the first over.
At the end of their 20 overs TAS had amassed 116 – a solid result as during the innings they were 3/25 and 5/62.
It was Matt Wykniet and Josh Taylor who steadied the ship for TAS, putting on a partnership of 55.
Wykniet made a half-century to top-score, while best of the Armidale High bowlers were Aiden Gallagher and Declan Waters who took two wickets each.
Armidale High started well in reply and at the halfway mark their run rate was the same as TAS.
Toward the end of their innings the wheels began to fall off and quick wickets saw them finish at 7/95, gifting TAS a 21-run win.
Hugh Reeves top-scored for Armidale High with 22, while Angus Pell starred with the ball for TAS, bagging three wickets.
The next round of matches will take place at TAS and Moran Oval on November 23.
TAS organiser Allan Moore encouraged spectators to come along and see some of Armidale’s best young cricketers in action.
“The players would love to have a big crowd for the next game, so come along and cheer on your side,” he said.
In Monday’s other match O’Connor had a convincing win over Duval High School.
