Big day expected at the track

4/11/2008 9:10:00 AM
A LARGE crowd is expected on course when the Armidale Jockey Club hosts their annual Melbourne Cup day picnic race meeting tomorrow.

A five-race program will be run with the first set to jump at 1.40pm.

As expected, the fields will be small with two to contest the first, three in the first, second and fourth races and four in the last.

Racing will break for an hour between 2.30 and 3.30 for the race that stops the nation at 3pm.

Jockey Club secretary Jim Dedes said he was expecting a great day.

“It should be good,” he said.

“We’ve battled to get horses, but that was to be expected and we’ve got enough to go around.

“We’re looking forward to it and we just hope the weather’s kind to us.”

Full bar, bookmakers and tote facilities will be available on course.

Dedes tipped second-favourite Septimus to run home ahead of Mad Rush and Mahtize.
