GUYRA-based coach Cliff Rowe has coached many young boxers in his 35-year career, but thinks he may have found a potential Olympian in 15-year-old Brandon Levy.
Levy, who lives at Glen Innes, is currently the Australian silver medallist in the 44 kilogram division, the 44 kilogram Queensland Schoolboy Champion and the Queensland Golden Gloves champion.
This year, he is tipped to get gold.
Last year Levy was selected by the National Talent Identification Squad for an Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) scholarship, which has given him full sponsorship to participate in fights here and internationally.
Under the scholarship, he also receives boxing training in Canberra by some of Australia’s best coaches.
His twelve-month AIS scholarship will soon expire, and he is in the process of applying for another one.
He was one of eight AIS-sponsored boxers to fight New Zealand’s selection team in an event hosted by Te Awamatu two weeks ago, and he defeated New Zealand national age champion Luke Jeffries by an impressive 22-3.
“He could hit you five times before you even knew it,” Rowe said,
“He is unbelievably quick.”
Rowe is confident that Levy has what it takes to make it to the Olympics.
“I am not one to open my mouth about things unless I’m sure,” Rowe said,
“I don’t like to be wrong and look a fool, but Brandon is the most talented young boxer I have ever come across.”
Levy will fight in the Northern NSW Boxing Association match at Tamworth Leagues Club this weekend, representing Glen Innes’ Team Rowe.
