Work is underway once more to bring the successful Midnight Basketball program back into Armidale this Saturday July 23 at SportUNE.
Midnight Basketball is a unique combination of sport and education for 12 to 18 year olds. The tournament will again run for eight weeks from 7.30pm till Midnight. The evening consists of a healthy dinner, life-skills workshop, heaps of tournament basketball and transport home at the end of the night.
With the programs motto “No Workshop, No Jump Shot”, in order to play basketball, all participants are required to attend the nightly workshop, dealing with a variety of teen-related issues ranging from topics such as communication skills, conflict resolution, health and wellbeing- including nutrition, drug and alcohol - team building and much more.
Shooting hoops, developing teamwork, learning new skills, making friends, keeping fit - these are just some of the fantastic benefits for the boys and girls registering to play in a Midnight Basketball competition. Its proven to be a great platform to meet new people and break down barriers, not only for the players, but to the volunteer assistants too.
The success of the program is dependent on community engagement. “We want people to come along to find out how Midnight Basketball works and how they can get involved. It’s a community driven program that requires a local committee and many volunteers needed for each night of the tournament including team managers, scorers, catering assistants and more,” said Josh Edmunds, Armidale tournament manager.
Midnight Basketball will commence this Saturday July 23 at SportUNE.
Registration is now open for both volunteers and players- visit www.midnightbasketball.org.au/Arm idale
