Bob Weston was the runaway winner of the Armidale Cycle Club’s 30km handicap race on Saturday afternoon on the Long Swamp Road.
He broke away from the group he started with in the first half of the race, and did the tough yards on his own for the remainder to record an easy win.
He was followed to the line by Craig Burton, Bob Murison, Nick Myhill, and Wilfred Keller.
Burton and Murison came to the finish together with a gap to Myhill and Keller.
The race was held in near perfect conditions, and competitor numbers are on the increase as the weather warms up.
A special mention must of Col Maciver’s outstanding efforts at the World Masters Games that were held in Sydney last month.
He competed in the three road cycling events - individual time trial, road race and criterium, competing in the Men’s masters 8 division for riders between 65 and 69 years of age.
The road race and the time trial were held at the Eastern Creek motor racing circuit, and the drag strip next door, and as Maciver likes a course that is challenging and has good hills in it, it did not suit his style of racing at all.
Nonetheless he was able to finish with a bronze medal in both of these events.
The criterium was held in the Botanical Gardens in Sydney, and again it was a flat course that did not suit his style.
As a result the race came down to a bunch sprint for the line and Maciver was only able to manage sixth place.
The club wishes to congratulate Maciver for an outstanding effort - you have done the club and Armidale proud.
