Emergency services were called to a home at about 7 o'clock after receiving reports shots had been fired.

Upon arrival, police located the body of a 25-year-old Armidale man inside the home suffering an apparent gunshot wound. The man's death is not being treated as suspicious.

A critically injured 26-year-old Armidale woman was also located inside the house. Responding police officers rendered first aid until the arrival of paramedics.

The woman, who was also suffering an apparent gunshot injury, was taken to Armidale Hospital but was unable to be revived and died a short time later.

A crime scene was established at the house and was examined by officers from the Forensic Services Group overnight.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated by detectives from the New England Local Area Command, with a report to be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
