Money, and the vulnerability of an economic system based on continuous growth, is the subject of the next Tuesday Forum organised by Sustainable Living Armidale A Transition Initiative (SLA).
Dr Judith McNeill, an economist with a special interest in programs for regional development, will share her thoughts on why the global economy is in such turmoil, and the impact of this on local areas such as Armidale.
“It seems inevitable that there will be a return to local capacities, local economies, local production of goods and services. If this is a planned and orderly change, we may experience a stronger sense of community and more satisfying lives,” Dr McNeill said.
The talk will be followed by an open discussion about policies that might strengthen the capacity of a local community, including the localisation of investment and enterprise.
The monthly SLA Tuesday Forums have proved popular with SLA members and the general public, with a range of presentations that stimulate discussion and action to help the Armidale community make the transition to a future that will be very different from the present because of climate change and the effects of peak oil.
The talk and discussion will be followed by the inaugural AGM of Sustainable Living Armidale Inc, at which office bearers will be elected, and delegates from the sub-groups endorsed.
The SLA Tuesday Forum is on July 7 at 7pm at Kent House (Allingham St, opposite Central Park). Everyone is welcome. Gold coin donation.
