LOCAL children with disabilities will be given the chance to experience something most people take for granted - the joy of riding a bicycle - when Freedom Wheels makes a stop in Armidale on Tuesday at Sandon Public School.
Set to bring a smile to the faces of thousands of children, the Freedom Wheels Modified Bike Service customises standard pushbikes to give a new kind of independence to children with disabilities by allowing them to ride a bicycle for the first time.
Freedom Wheels is a joint undertaking between the award winning Technical Aid to the Disabled TADNSW and principle corporate sponsor Amway of Australia, whose support has allowed TADNSW to take the program regionally and now interstate.
Children in the Armidale area will be individually assessed at the Freedom Wheels bike clinic.
This assessment process ensures that each child receives a bicycle that is perfectly suited to his or her age, height, weight and physical ability.
Some of the modifications include stabiliser wheels, postural supports, belts, foot cups, towbars and modified handlebars, which all help the rider remain stable and supported while they ride.
It is the first step towards giving children with disabilities a newfound freedom.
Prior to the sponsorship support provided by Amway's One by One Foundation, volunteers would spend between 30 and 50 hours modifying just one bicycle.
This has now been reduced to as little as three hours with the introduction of pre-made components.
TADNSW has been providing services to clients with disabilities for more than 30 years and Freedom Wheels is just one of the many services they provide to people with disabilities.
Parents interested in registering their child for the bike clinic or would like more information about the Freedom Wheels program please contact TADNSW on 1300 553-243 or 9912-3400.
