ELEVEN year-old Matur Maluach arrived in Armidale four years ago from Sudan to begin a new life in Australia. This year he will be the school captain of Drummond Primary and he’s hoping to set an example for the younger generations.
“I've been looking forward to being captain,” Matur said.
“I'm hoping to be able to show the younger kids what a real leader is.
“I think a leader is someone who is respectful to students and teachers.”
The young captain has excelled in both academic and sporting arenas in his four years at Drummond, last year leading the school basketball team to win the state championships. The six foot youngster also plays in the under 16 Armidale representative team, where he plays along side his brother, Makuach Maluach.
Matur said he has big plans, besides becoming a professional basketballer.
“I would like to finish university first,” he said.
“I'm not sure which degree yet though.
"But I really enjoy maths because I'm alright at it.”
Annabell Froome will captain Drummond along side Matur and both said they are ready to lead the school.
