LOCAL senior citizens have an opportunity to keep fit and healthy through the courses and activities of the University of the Third Age Armidale (U3AA), according to Doug Crocker, president of the organisation.
U3AA is a purely volunteer organisation that provides courses and activities for seniors aimed at keeping both mind and body healthy.
Doug says that U3AA are holding an ‘open day’ on Thursday, January 15 at ASCA House (on the corner of Barney and Markham Sts) to showcase the 40 or so mostly weekly activities that will run during the first semester for 2009, from January to June.
The group’s activities include discussion groups, handicrafts, games, languages, exercise programs, singing, outdoor activities, bus trips and even computer lessons – all conducted in a friendly and relaxed way with plenty of companionship offered to members.
The annual registration fee is $25 and then most courses and activities are free except for a few activities where entry fees are payable or a small contribution is asked to cover rent or other costs.
Mr Crocker said activities are about to commence for 2009.
If you would like to be part of an active seniors’ group in Armidale with plenty of activities to interest you come and meet the university’s tutors at their open day on Thursday, January 15 at ASCA House from 9am to 1pm or call into the office at the rear of ASCA House on Mondays, Tuesday or Wednesdays between 9.30am and midday.
