Every day, five males commit suicide in Australia. Many of them do so as a result of the traumatic effects experienced after separation and divorce.
The Dads in Distress (DIDs) call line receives between three and six calls from the Armidale area every week.
In response, DIDs has opened a free weekly meeting in Armidale at the Armidale Neighbourhood Centre.
DIDs support services offers support for men experiencing difficulties after divorce or separation, or who may just need someone to talk to.
The group says divorced dads have the responsibility to continue to support their children both emotionally and financially, and group members are doing just that.
Unfortunately many are still fighting just to see their children, even though they pay child support.
The group has always been about bringing fairness and equity to the system, according to DIDs founder/director Tony Miller.
Many men are finding the new system difficult to understand and are not sure who to turn to.
DIDs offer free weekly meetings, a website www.dadsindistress.asn.au and a call line 1300-853-437 to support men who may need help in navigating the maze of family law, child support issues and emotional support. The Armidale DIDs group meets every Sunday at 7pm at the Armidale Neighbourhood Centre, 129 Rusden St.
