Hamish hopes to claim Biggest Loser title

23 Jan, 2012 07:56 AM
HAMISH Elliot believes a determination to ‘feel comfortable in social situations’ will help him progress deep into season seven of the reality television show The Biggest Loser.

The 21-year-old former Armidale resident, who weighed around 146 kilograms prior to his acceptance on the hit show, wants to become an inspiration to others.

A personal promise to live a more active lifestyle, go outside his comfort zone and weigh below 100 kilograms encouraged him to apply for the new season, which will premiere at 7pm tonight on Channel Ten.

Over the course of 13 weeks, contestants will perform cardiovascular, circuit, interval and weights training to burn fat through a consistently high heart rate.

They will also be required to compete in different weekly tasks through major challenges, ‘the contest’, temptations and ‘the walk’, before being involved in an elimination process.

The show will revert to a singles format this season with all contestants sharing the belief their weight has held them back from a love life.

As a part of the males under 30 blue team, Hamish will be mentored by experienced trainer Shannan Ponton, which he said was going to be an exciting challenge.

“Shannan’s been awesome so far, he’s a pretty strong character so I’ve just got to work really hard and build that relationship with him,” he said.

Despite a constant struggle to lose weight, which has 'affected me in a lot of different things', he has drawn newfound motivation from the efforts of past contestant Sam Rouen.

Hamish said he can relate to the problems season three winner Rouen has gone through

after he too was a victim of bullying at school.

“Sam was a young bloke like me and he suffered from the same stuff I did.

“When he was growing up, he obviously had to put up with the type of things I did when I was at school,” he said.

Having survived a difficult phase in his life, Hamish hopes the show will now help to cure a lack of confidence.

But he said the mental changes he has undergone have already proven to be the hardest aspect of being on The Biggest Loser.

“I think all of us before coming into camp thought it was just going to be about the weight loss, but in essence it's really about the mental changes, and they'll take the longest time for you to improve.”
