Encouraging youth creativity with photo comp

01 May, 2009 10:38 AM
HARVEY Norman, Olympus and The Armidale Express have joined forces to sponsor a community initiative to encourage Armidale's youth in their artistic development.

The Express is looking for high school students to participate in our 'Colours of New England' photography competition. We believe this will be a rewarding, educational and artistically empowering experience for students.

Entries are limited to high school aged students of Armidale, Uralla, Walcha, Guyra, Glen Innes and surrounds.

We are looking for submissions every month from now and until the competition ends in October.

Entries should be submitted either in person to the Express office at 115 Faulkner St (opp. town library) or by post to: The Armidale Express PO Box 70, Armidale 2350. All entries must be accompanied by an official entry form which can be found in every edition of The Armidale Express.

Entries should be submitted as a 8"x10" glossy print Harvey Norman Armidale will print any student's entries for the discounted rate of $2.95 ea (normally $4.95ea).

We will have a panel of experts judge the entries on their artistic merit and relevance to the competition theme: 'Colours of New England'.

The judges' decisions are final.

Generous prizes are on offer each month for the six entries judged to be the best of that month.

Each finalist will receive:

1. Publication in full colour gloss in The Armidale Express' 'My Life' lifestyle magazine.

2. Each month's finalist entries will be on display at Harvey Norman Armidale.

3. Twenty (20) free 6"x4" print vouchers valid at Harvey Norman Armidale.

In addition to these prizes, the person judged to have the best entry in each month of the competition will receive a 30cm x 45cm canvas print of their photo (donated by Harvey Norman) and an Olympus FE 45 Digital Camera (rrp $149).

At the end of October, the competition will culminate in a grand prize for the best entry over the six-month period. The grand prize is an Olympus E30 Digital SLR camera kindly donated by Olympus (valued at $1999 rrp).

Students are welcome to enter more than once, but they cannot enter the same photograph twice.

This will give the students the opportunity to 'stretch their legs' artistically and submit a variety of their work rather than a single entry.

The Express will combine the best 12 entries into a 2010 calendar which will be on sale at newsagents and local retailers and may also be available to be sold through schools.

A portion of the calendar sales will go to a local charity.

To enter, pick up a copy of the Armidale Express for the official entry form.

For your entry to be vaild for the June edition of MyLife magazine, your submission will need to be received by The Armidale Express by the close of business 12 June 2009.

Good luck and happy snapping!
