The fact that Armidale is bursting with talent is undeniable.
Duval High School is producing much of that talent, with students competing to appear in the Schools Spectacular to be held in Sydney in November.
Recently back from Sydney, Year 11’s Imogen Dean and Year 8 student, Nic Kelly, said auditioning was ‘extremely competitive’.
Both have appeared recently in the school’s production of Bugsy Malone and have their sights set on singing careers.
Nic has been chosen to compete again as one of 15 juniors, hoping to make the final pick and represent his school at the final Schools Spectacular performance at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.
While Imogen didn’t get through this round, she is determined to do ‘whatever I can’ to forge a career in singing.
“Competing in Sydney was a great experience,” she said.
“It was a very important step in terms of performing.
“It was quite scary, but inspiring, too.”
Nic said he’s aiming for Broadway.
“Performing in front of over 20,000 people at the Sydney Entertainment Centre would be awesome.
“I really do have my sights set on Broadway.
“I think to succeed, you need to aim high.”
Could Nic be another Peter Allen or Hugh Jackman?
He certainly has the talent and the drive.
“Nothing will quell my enthusiasm,” he said.
