Club stuck in the rough

22 Feb, 2012 08:14 AM
Armidale Golf Club’s financial woes have worsened following revelations it has suffered losses of more than $94,800 over the past four years.

Consistent rain has hampered the amount of golf played at its Armidale club during this time, particularly over the past 12 months, when potentially 5000 rounds of golf that would have been played haven’t because of bad weather.

No surprises. The club has been kidding itself over its sense of importance for some time with its fees.

Social golf is now $25 for unlimited golf; that's a fair chunk of change, but - & here's the killer - it's barely any cheaper to be a member!

Assume a social golfer who plays golf 30 times a year, at the 3 primary levels of membership available it works out:

Gold = $700, @ a cost of $23/round.

Silver = ($480 + $180) = $660, @ $22/round.

Bronze = $300 + $450) = $750, @ $25/round.

What incentives exist to become a member for someone who doesn't value a HC & associated amenities?

2/2

Where is the basic, >$200 membership (which would bring it into line with football or cricket fees), with cheap green fees (>$5) to attract the purely social golfer?

Where are the other services, like a non-alcohol serving area, non-publike family area, cheap training facilities or training days, or club fitting (though to be fair the pro shop is coming along leaps and bounds)?

Boohoo to the old guard and the unchanging, inflexible and frankly, obtuse business nous dragging the place down.

TS how come you did not raise these points with the board at any stage?

Why did you not stand up at the club information night that was patronised by over 110 club members and have your say?

I have contacted several members of the board recently all of them are available at any stage to talk to any member and prospective member about any concerns/issues/ideas that you may have.

This is not the only golf club in region having the same issues.

An earlier issue of the Northern Daily Leader showed this to be the case. No regional golf club can sustain the level of wet weather that we have received over the last two years and expect to be in a stable suituation.

If they need more numbers, they need

to drop the fee, TS is right.. I play Uralla regularly because they offer 9 holes for $10. If Armidale GC reduced the prices, there would be an escalation in numbers and this would have a flow on effect for the Club. Its a shame that the club has not learnt the lessons of other country clubs and still continues to be overpriced both in membership and green fees.

Its Armidale not Huntingdale.

"Why did you not stand up at the club information night that was patronised by over 110 club members and have your say?"

I do not mean to be glib, but perhaps because it was patronised only by 110 club members, and this is the first I have heard of it?

I am in the process of emailing my concerns to the club; I sincerely hope they do not fall on deaf ears.

SR

I think people seriously undervalue the quality of golf course that is available in armidale. There is no other town in regional NSW with a similar population that produces the quality golf course that Armidale does.
