NORTHERN Tablelands MP Richard Torbay has made ‘one throw of the dice’ in a bid to get the State Government to the table on the controversial Barney St public housing project.
Mr Torbay has written to both Premier Kristina Keneally and Housing Minister David Borger in an 11th hour attempt to secure some consultation on the development.
Residents in the area are not opposed to the development, but are asking that it be single-storey and controlled by the Department of Housing.
Mr Torbay is calling on the premier and Housing Minister to approach the Federal Government for an extension of time to spend funds allocated under the Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan, ‘so that meaningful consultation can take place with those concerned’.
The MP said he was aware that the Stimulus Plan required funding to be spent quickly.
“However, this timeframe has not allowed for legitimate and proper discussion to be undertaken in respect of the concerns raised by the community and council,” he told the Premier and the Minister.
Mr Torbay is still waiting on written replies to two earlier letters to Mr Borger.
The Express understands that the contract for the Barney St development has been let to Leahy Constructions of Kempsey and that they intend to begin work this week.
