A HOMELESS Armidale couple have just become the first tenants to receive a home under Stage 2 of the Federal Government’s $1.9-billion Nation Building Stimulus Plan.
NSW Housing Minister, Mr David Borger, said it’s perfect timing for this couple as there’s no better gift than getting the keys to their new home just 48 hours before Christmas Day.
More needy people and families will be moving into the seven two- and three-bedroom units in Taylor St between Christmas and New Year.
All are owned by the Aboriginal Housing Office and will be managed by Housing NSW.
“The $1.7 million development is environmentally friendly featuring water harvesting, energy efficient gas hot water services, insulation and low energy light fittings, Mr Borger said.
Local builder, Boulus Construction Pty Ltd, developed the homes employing more than 90 tradespeople and 14 apprentices.
“This work is not just about jobs for builders and tradespeople but also associated industries such as building manufacturers and suppliers who help keep the Australian economy ticking over,” Mr Borger said.
“These new Stage 2 Stimulus homes are among 6000 to be built across the State before June 2012.
“All will provide people in need with accommodation they can afford, be they seniors, those with disabilities, people at risk of homelessness or people on low incomes.”
Christine Waters and her partner, who were previously homeless, are the first tenants in the building and can’t believe their luck.
“We’re so grateful for our new home and can’t wait to move in.
“It couldn’t be better timing with Christmas and the New Year fast approaching. This will make a real difference for our family,” Ms Waters said.
