Graduate nurses to restore pulse in regional hospitals

06 Feb, 2012 07:53 AM
SIX NEW NURSES will be welcomed at Armidale hospital today as part of the record-breaking graduates program.

The program has seen 2163 positions offered across the state.

Minister for Health Jillian Skinner revealed the government had allocated 500 more positions than last year.

Ms Skinner said she was happy to see many nurses choosing to begin their careers in the country.

One of the local graduates, Emily Haddon, accepted a 12-month contract after completing her degree at the University of New England (UNE).

Ms Haddon said she has always wanted to become a nurse and suggested she could even return to university to do a midwifery course once her contract ends.

“I just want to help people and care for them.

“I’ve also always had an interest in medical shows on television and their surgical procedures, so it’ll be an exciting experience.

“I might try and do midwifery, but I’d probably have to move because UNE doesn’t offer it.”

Apart from Armidale, 21 more nurses will be added to the staff at Tamworth hospital, three at Moree and one each at Barraba, Bingara, Glen Innes, Gunnedah, Narrabri and Inverell.
