Acclaimed art on display

18 Nov, 2009 09:10 AM
Armidale is being offered a rare opportunity to view Aboriginal artwork of a standard never seen before in NSW with an exhibition by Lloyd Hornsby, called On the Surface, Hands Off, opening at the Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Keeping Place on November 28 at 5pm.

This exhibition is a ‘must’ for serious art lovers and investors.

Hornsby’s unique work is highly acclaimed, both nationally and internationally by galleries, cultural exchanges and within academic circles.

Hornsby is known in art circles as a storyteller, his artwork is ‘urbanised contemporary’ - combining traditional Aboriginal dot painting with visions of contemporary Australian life and landscapes.

His art is an expression of Hornsby’s own history, having only a few years ago discovered his grandmother was Aboriginal, not descended from New Zealand Maoris, as he and his family previously believed.

Hornsby is one of the Yuin tribe based South of Sydney.

His discovery was only recent, but his work, which dates back to the 1960’s, has always displayed a close affinity to the genre of Aboriginal art and Aboriginal culture.

Hornsby’s art has become a great attraction for international and national investors and art-lovers.

Even in current uncertain economic times the demand for Aboriginal art has reached unprecedented heights in Australia and overseas.

Art has always been a store of value and a vehicle for capital appreciation. Although it was once the sole domain of the wealthy, art collecting is now a lucrative investment opportunity open to virtually anyone.

“Aboriginal art is the world’s last great art movement,” renowned art critic Robert Hughes said.

“It now accounts for almost half the value of the Australian art market and around 70 per cent of total exports of Australian art.

“That’s an outstanding achievement for a group that represents just two per cent of the Australian population.”

Mr Hornsby will conduct a master art class, a one-off opportunity to learn from a true master and acclaimed artist.

Private viewings will be arranged following the exhibition opening, for people interested in purchasing one of Mr Hornsby’s artworks.

For further information on the workshops, opening and private viewings, call Daisy William on 6771-3606.
